O Xbox 360 é o sucessor do console de jogos da, gigante, Microsoft, a mesma empresa que faz o Windows, o Office e uma série de outros programas,  desenvolvido em cooperação com a IBM, ATI, Samsung e SiS.

O Xbox 360 foi apresentada oficialmente na Music TV, dos Estados Unidos da América, em 12 de Maio de 2005, os detalhes do lançamento e jogos divulgados uma semana depois na E³, a maior convenção de jogos eletrônicos do mundo que ocorre anualmente no Centro de Convenções de Los Angeles (Estados Unidos da América).

O console foi lançada, para o público, em 22 de Novembro de 2005 nos Estados Unidos da América, em 2 de Dezembro de 2005 na Europa e em 10 de Dezembro de 2005 foi lançada no Japão. No Brasil, o Xbox 360 é vendido oficialmente pela Microsoft desde 1º de dezembro de 2006 tornando-o o primeiro console de jogos a ser comercializado diretamente por sua fabricante no país. O que da uma garantia oficial da Microsoft de 3 anos.

O Xbox 360 compete no mercado com a PlayStation 3, da Sony, e o Wii (antes chamado de Nintendo Revolution), da Nintendo.

No dia 28 de Março de 2007 a Microsoft anunciou o lançamento, de uma terceira versão do console, o Xbox 360 Elite. Porém este console só começou a ser comercializado dia 29 de Abril, nos Estados Unidos da América.
